A virus spread across the globe so fast that it happened in an instant. Anyone over the age of thirteen had an extremely high chance of dying, while the younger humans were spared for the most part. Children all around the world lost their parents or guardians, though there were a small percentage that were lucky enough to still have someone looking out for them. As soon as the world fell into chaos an ancient race emerged from deep underground - vampires. These nocturnal creatures seized control of entire countries in a single swoop taking places of power in the massive hole where governments once stood. The end was also the beginning of a new common monster that began to roam the streets. These creatures were called Four Horsemen of John, these mindless beasts attacked humans and vampires alike however the vampires were equipped to take them down and often exploited this. Vampires would offer protection and in return the humans would become their livestock. While the situation is similar all over the world, the main focus is in Japan. What was left of humanity had banded together to create an army - the Japanese Imperial Demon Army (JIDA). Their numbers aren't magnificent but they do their best to keep the vampire threat at bay while trying to put an end to them altogether. To combat the vampires and their regeneration capabilities, the humans had to be able to strike blows that would be harder to heal so they could get in a fatal hit. As such they created Cursed Gear, weapons that contained demons within that would slow a vampire's healing process long enough that they could be killed. With the playing field evened out a little bit more, the war was on. Mikaela's role in this world was to have a front row seat to the end of the world. His childhood before the age of eight could have been considered fairly normal. An abusive alcoholic father and a crazed mother meant he ended up in an orphanage with a lot of other children. It seemed to be a nice place on the surface but secretly they were running experiments on the kids. This is where he met the main character, Yuichiro. He was accepted into the group of children as family even if Yuu denied it and fought against it. Shortly after Yuu's arrival to the orphanage is when the world ended - Christmas 2012. Their caretaker was killed by the disease and almost immediately the group of orphans were taken by the vampires. They were led down to the vampire's underground city, Sanguinem, where they became "livestock". For four years Mika and the other orphans had blood taken from them to feed the city's vampires and lived off the bare minimum. Without any knowledge of life outside on the surface they were forced to believe that anyone over the age of thirteen would be killed by the virus that ended the world. Things began to change when Mika started seeing a vampire named Ferid Bathory at the age of twelve. While it was against the rules to drink from the livestock in the city, Ferid was one who constantly broke this rule. In return Mika was allowed to take things from Ferid's house and one night he returned to their little hovel with a map of Sanguinem and a gun. He told Yuu that they should run away, get to the surface and be free. He convinced the other to agree, to gather the other children and make their escape. It was not to be. Just before they reached the exit Ferid appeared and quickly killed the younger children. In an attempt to give Yuu a chance, he attacked Ferid with the gun but wasn't quick enough. Ferid struck out at him and Mika lost an arm and had a gaping hole in his chest. Outraged, Yuu shot the vampire in the head and attempted to drag Mika to the exit. However Mika pushed him away when they heard others approaching and forced Yuu to leave. Left alone he lay dying but it was not to be. Ferid had survived the gunshot and was punished by a new arrival. When she was done with Ferid, she turned her attention to Mika. He wanted to die but instead she forced him to drink her blood so that he would become a vampire as well. The woman who saved him was in fact the vampire queen of Japan - the third progenitor Krul Tepes. In the years that followed Mika refused to drink human blood and survived solely on Krul's blood. She made him part of his army but kept him close at the same time. Sometimes he would go overseas to human labs where they were tasked with putting an end to a project that involved a species known as the Seraph of the End. Meaning they killed any specimens that were still alive and learned that these sorts of experiments could be used on Yuu by the humans. It wasn't until he was sixteen when Mika was reunited with the last living Hyakuya orphan. He was sent to Shinjuku under Ferid's command to eliminate the Japanese Imperial Demon Army and ended up in a fight with one man in particular, Guren Ichinose. Just as he was about to kill Guren, he was stabbed by none other than Yuichiro. Mika attempted to take Yuu away from the battle - away from humans and vampires alike in order to protect him. Unfortunately it was not to be as the rest of Yuu's team was overwhelmed by Ferid's vampires and something unnatural was unleashed inside his friend. Mika watched at Yuu lost control of himself and his attacks became directed towards the very people he'd wanted to protect. Unable to let Yuu hurt his family, Mika placed himself in the way of his blade but it was Shinoa who brought Yuu back under control. If he'd been able, Mika would have stayed with Yuu but he was dragged back to Sanguinem by Ferid where he spent time healing from his battle. While attending a meeting alongside Krul, he learned a few things about seraphs and the vampire council. About Yuu. It only made him more determined to save Yuu from the humans and vampires. The next time Mika is allowed to go to the surface it's to gather up children to become livestock and Mika nearly attacks one for their blood. He's able to prevent himself but is horrified by what he'd almost done. The time after that is a call for war. All this time the humans have believed themselves to be at war with the vampires but in return the vampires didn't quite feel the same. Now is when the vampires get serious about wiping out the members of JIDA. Sent alongside a group of other vampires, Mika joined the battle at Nagoya and came across a human JIDA squad. They attempted to kill themselves rather than be tortured by the vampires but Mika is able to prevent one from taking her life. He attempted to quietly get information out of her about Yuu without the other vampires knowing but it goes horribly awry. The information is given but in the end she throws herself at Mika and forces him to kill her so that no one else can get the information. Mika and a small squad of vampires head towards Nagoya City Hall where he believed Yuu to be but he couldn't let the vampires get to his friend. Within an instant he struck them all down and headed there by himself. His path led him straight into a group of hunters and they crossed blades. When he saw Yuu was in the group but unconscious, he threw aside his own safety in an attempt to reach him. However his emotions got the better of him and a man named Shinya nearly killed him - would have if not for Yuu's teammates interferring. All of them stepped forward in an attempt to protect Mika from the other hunters but their stand-off was interupted by the arrival of more vampires. Yuu's squad entrusted him with Yuu, directions to where they were going next and he fled the battlefield carrying his friend away with him. Only once they were far enough away did he stop while he waited for Yuu to wake up. The injuries inflicted upon him with the hunters cursed gear had taken its toll and once again he nearly loses control of himself by attacking a wandering child. Once again he's able to stop himself but his control is so brittle. So brittle that when Yuu offered up his own blood, Mika accepted. He fought at first but relented in the end and with his first drink of human blood he completed the transformation. Afterwards Mika attempted to get Yuu to leave with him - to get far away and be free like they had dreamed of once upon a time. Yuu was having none of that and so they headed off to Nagoya Airport to meet up with Yuu's allies. By the time they got there a fight was already underway. Humans against humans, humans against vampires and in the middle of it all was Yuu's squad. Something else rattled the battlefield - a creature that looked human but had four majestic wings. This was a seraph, one belonging to JIDA who also happened to be the younger sister of one of Yuu's squad members. More fighting followed and Mika merely lended a hand because it's where Yuu happened to be. Yuu used his own seraph abilities to fight against both the seraph and humans, only then having to allow his demon to possess him to put a stop to that. After getting what would have been a fatal blow, Yuu fell unconscious and Mika almost allowed Krul to attempt to save him. In the end he watched as Ferid and another vampire took down the vampire queen and he was left with no other option but to flee. For Yuu's sake he escaped with escaped with the squad. Three months later found them to be living a relatively peaceful life. Yuu healed but became possessed by his demon a little more everyday. They hid among some humans along the shore as they attempted to figure out what they should do. Going back to JIDA was out of the question and there was no way they could go to the vampires now that Krul was no longer in control but they had to do something. Just when they made up their mind to attempt to rescue Krul, they ran out of time. Ferid and his underling, Crowley found them and attacked Yuu's comrades. The Hyakuya pair decided to "work alongside Ferid" for the time being in order to save Yuu's allies. Of course Ferid had his own little schemes going and presented them with the head of one of the kids from the same orphanage as them. Yuu went beserk and his demon possessed him again to which Ferid offered up a drug solution. Unwilling to just accept it, Mika attacked but was headed off by Crowley while Ferid injected Yuu. Once done Yuu fell unconscious and the group had no option but to go along with Ferid. PERSONALITYBy the age of eight, Mika was already fairly grown up. After literally being thrown away by his own family, he found a new one in the other kids at the orphanage. Being the eldest, he took responsibility for their well-being as their big brother and attempted to keep them a happy little family. He always tried to smile and be cheerful, even when he roughed up the grumpy new kid, Yuuichiro. Things changed when their adult caretaker was hit by the virus and the children were taken in by the vampires as livestock. Mika still did his best to take of his family, which included selling his blood for good food every now and then. While he was that cheerful kid, he also had an unruly sibling to look after and keep safe from his own loud mouth. Four years of this lifestyle did change him a little and placed the care of their family almost squarely on his shoulders, he did rely on Yuu and Akane to help out. He was very aware of the fact that they couldn't defeat the vampires so instead of thinking about fighting them like Yuu did - Mika wanted to escape to the surface even if there wasn't anyone there. His childhood shows that Mika is the type of person who attempts to take on everything by himself for the most part. From the well-being of the other in his family to their deaths, it's a weight that's always been carried on his shoulders. When they were alive and well, things were so much better and Mika had dreams for their future together. He waited patiently for the right moment for them to get to the surface for their sake and encouraged Yuu to one day fight the vampires that he hated so much. Their death was a huge part of the reason that Mika has lost that cheerful nature and his smile. He blames himself for not being strong enough to protect them and was willing to give his own life to make sure that Yuu escaped. For his family, Mika would shoulder any burden alone if he could and has never once blamed Yuu for leaving him behind like he demanded. He was much happier with the fact that Yuu had said they were family for the first time than being sad about his own death. There is literally nothing that he wouldn't do for the last member of the Hyakuya orphanage and Yuu is the only person he cares for at all. When given the opportunity between being saved by becoming a vampire and dying, Mika chose death. He would have rather been dead than a vampire that Yuu hated so much. Unfortunately, the choice wasn't really left to him and in the end he was forced to live as a monster. Despite that fact, he has constantly made the choice since then to not drink human blood. Being livestock for four years and Yuu's feelings had a great impact that decision. Instead he's chosen to drink the blood of his creator and has been able to pull himself back from attacking a child when in the middle of his blood lust. Another part of the reason is because he's often reminded of that day when he lost his family and Mika is often reminded of his siblings when he looks at them. Sometimes he looks down at them and sees a kid who is stubborn and determined like Yuu or another who's kind and motherly like Akane and it's impossible for him to even think of drinking. Even now that Mika has had human blood, he still constantly fight about drinking it. He's finished the change but he hates the idea of drinking a human's blood and will go as long as possible without it. When pressed, he refused the blood gathered by Yuu's friends but did relent in the end because he did what was necessary to stay by Yuu's side. While it's true that he only cares about Yuu in the great wide world, he does have a soft spot towards children. Whether they live in the underground city of the vampires or on the surface makes little difference. Children are children no matter where they live and he may not go out of his way to protect them, he doesn't do anything to harm either. Vampires may be forbidden to drink blood straight from the source in the underground and free to do whatever they please on the surface but Mika doesn't play that way. If there is a kid who reminds him of someone in his family, he might help them out a little but honestly Mika despises both humans and vampires alike. His reasons for hating vampires is easy considering all that he's suffered through at their hands. They're vile creatures who see humans as nothing more than livestock and will kill them if they feel the urge to. Vampires play with their food and have no hesitation when it comes to taking whatever their whims may be. Once upon a time, Mika might have liked humans. The treatment given to him by his own parents might have turned into an anti-social child but instead he gathered the other orphans around him like family. It wasn't difficult to relate to others that had been cast aside and so Mika wanted to protect them. Since he was reintroduced to the human race, Mika doesn't want anything to do with them. He was willing to let Yuu's team die if it meant that they two of them could just disappear. It's his belief that humans are only using his friend and because of that it grew nothing but mistrust and hatred in his heart. That's why he was so surprised when he saw a group of humans who sacrificed themselves rather than give up their allies. Who knows what kind of information he's been fed about humans during the last four years but he will even outright state that he hates them as much as he hates vampires. Mika is very aware that the adults of the Hyakuya orphanage experimented on him and the other children and some of his feelings come from this. People he trusted that betrayed him. Added to his parents' behavior, it was enough for Mika to not come to give his trust so easily. He considers their loyalty to die for each other rather terrifying despite the fact that - four years earlier - Mika had been ready to die for Yuu's sake. Of course, his hatred for vampires also means that Mika hates what he is. For all of the benefits being a vampire has granted him, he despises himself. Accepting what he is is difficult for him and probably won't be something he will ever be able to do. Rather than live for himself, Mika is living for Yuu. He's spent the last four years searching for his friend and intends to rescue him from tainted human hands. If it were up to him, the two of them would run far away from both humans and vampires. Despite his feelings towards the humans Mika does take a blow meant for one of them. The only reason for this is because he was trying to protect Yuu from being hurt. It was his intent only to prevent Yuu from killing someone that he might consider a friend - to prevent Yuu from carrying the weight of that death. Mika has gone from that cheerful, friendly kid to a quiet loner who prefers to spend his time brooding over old memories than in the company of others. It isn't unusual to find him lingering in the place where his family died and getting him to talk is near-impossible. The only individuals he does talk to at length are his creator, Krul, and the vampire who killed his family, Ferid. There is some level of trust when it comes to dealing with Krul. Mika trusts her to the point that she'll keep him alive and give him blood while helping him to capture Yuu - even if it's for her own purposes. As for Ferid, he has no trust for the vampire but isn't able to kill either. The vampire forces his presence on Mika and so Mika tolerates him to a point. Out of everyone, only Krul and Ferid know about the Seraph gene that both he and Yuu possess. To Ferid, Mika is nothing more than a toy to play with and a tool to use. There are two other vampires that he's usually around - Lacus and René. Lacus often tries to involve Mika in conversations but is usually ignored. It's how he treats pretty much everyone unless he has ulterior motives. There is one aspect of Mika that has stayed the same and that's his intelligence. As a child, he plotted their escape by allowing Ferid to drink his blood so that he could search his place for a map. On top of getting a map, he also got a gun to protect them. While he failed to see that it was a trap, Mika knew that they couldn't take the vampires straight on. They had to sneak out if they wanted to escape their life. Being only eight when he was taken as livestock means that Mika didn't have much of an education but he does know how to read, write and some other basic things. Still, he has a fairly strategic mind for someone with his background. It doesn't always compare to those who are older but he does pretty well thinking a few steps ahead and also thinking on his feet. He's also fairly patient. Mika waited four years before attempting his escape from the vampires and planned carefully while gathering information about their foe. Then he proceeded to wait another four years to learn of news about Yuu. However, once his goal is right in front of him - Mika does tend to forget to exercise patience. He got his hands on the map and they left that night. Yuu was right in front of him and Mika tried to run off with him. Even his best laid plans start to fall apart when he loses his patience. His over-eagerness tends to get the better of him and usually ends up being his downfall. It's difficult for him to see anything once his goal is within his reach. Unlike some of the others in the series, Mika doesn’t seem to kill or even enjoy it. He doesn’t do it for the glory or pleasure that other vampires do. To him, killing horsemen is just a task that he’s been given and so he does it. Other people can take credit for it – they can have the glory if they want it. They also enjoy killing humans but not Mika. Part of the reason is because he knows what it’s like be a human up against the stronger species. He doesn’t look down on them like they’re as insignificant as an animal raised to be eaten and takes no pleasure in killing them. In fact, Mika even tried to let one of the members of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army escape with her life in return for the information she gave him about Yuu. Unfortunately, he was forced to take her life in order to protect his worthless one. On the other side of that, he does find some enjoyment in killing vampires and will do so without any hesitation at all. Mika might even do it with a little smile. If anyone of any species threatens Yuu, he becomes very dangerous. Despite the fact that he has yet to kill Ferid in revenge, Mika would wipe him out in a heartbeat just for talking about the other teen. He also tried his best to kill Guren when faced against the man, especially after learning of his connection to Yuu. All-in-all, Mika isn’t likely to show his emotions much these days. On the outside, he appears to be fairly neutral or generally grumpy towards nearly everything unless it happens to involve Yuu in some way. Even he makes note of the fact that he hasn’t cried in years after Mika is given the opportunity to see Yuu again. During his battle with Guren, he pretty much remains impassive until the only person he cares about shows up. Seeing Yuu again makes all of his old emotions resurface almost as if they’ve been frozen since becoming a vampire. To others, his detached nature might even make them believe him to be arrogant even though that’s so far from the truth. He simply doesn’t care about his own well-being at all beyond the fact that now he’s strong enough to protect the one person he cares about in the world. Mika can’t die until he’s saved Yuu and that’s all there is to his life. ABILITIES« vampire First and foremost is his bloodlust. Every vampire in OnS needs to drink blood to survive and not turn into demons and Mikaela is no exception to that. He refused to drink human blood and only partook of the blood of his creator for the first four years. Due to the fact that Mika didn't drink human blood, his strength was actually lesser than it should be. He also still aged. At this point he has had human blood so he has stop getting older and gained "immortality" along with an increase of strength. The moment he drank human blood his eyes changed from blue to red to signify the transition. They also seem to fluctuate between having round pupils to having slit ones. Of course, in order to get blood he possess a set of typical vampire fangs. These are visible when he speaks.« strength Mikaela has at least seven times the strength of a regular human. This means he could easily pick up a car and toss it. Picking someone up is incredibly easy and he could even snap a bone with ease. He has also chopped a limb off when provoked. Dealing with a creature who has a hard outer casing is simple such as the Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Because his strength is enhanced, it also allows him to move faster. He can be in one spot one second and be in a different one in the blink of an eye if needed. Of course, this means that Mika can use his strength and speed to scale buildings in a matter of seconds. « regeneration As a vampire, he's also granted regeneration capabilities. He can recover from minor wounds almost instantly and even fatal ones fairly quickly. Before Mika became a vampire he had been stabbed through the chest and his right arm severed. His regeneration is so powerful that not only was his life saved but his arm was reattached. Of course, the more injured he is the more his bloodlust rises. « sword While it should be noted that he's very capable with a sword, Mika's sword in particular is special. It is a first-class vampire sword that cannot be wielded by just any common vampire - It's capable of drinking his blood and sprouts red vines that wrap around his hand, while the blade itself turns red. The more blood it drinks, the more enhanced his strength and speed is. « seraph On top of being a vampire, Mika carries the gene of something called a Seraph. After being abandoned by his parents, he was taken into an orphange where they proceeded to experiment on all of the children. Currently there is not a lot of information regarding Mikaela's seraph gene other than the fact that he contains the Michaela trait. All Seraphs have different abilities based on the number of their trumpets - as of yet canon has only revealed Yuu to be the 2nd trumpet, the 5th and 6th have also been shown. So far all of the Seraphs have been revealed to have wings and are able to fly with them.
